Duratrans are the traditional large, backlit transparencies printed on Kodak’s duratrans film. Duratrans are displayed in the duratrans light box, which means its box with a back, contains daylight balanced fluorescent tubes, and has the front lip looking to accept the sandwich of plexiglass over duratrans. These large advertising transparencies have been around forever, but what changed is how we expose the latent image. We do not use the traditional enlargers, rather we expose the film with lasers from our Lightjet imagesetter. The Lightjet provides an apparent resolution of 4000 DPI. The backlit duratrans made with this imagesetter, are not your grandmother’s old transparency prints! Historically, duratrans were looked grainy and softer, due to both the enlarged grain of film and the optical lenses employed. Digital technology has greatly improved this form of print making by pairing digital image files with a laser Lightjet imagesetter. PhotoWorksGroup continues to offer this superior method of printing to clients seeking the ‘sharpest tool in the shed.’ Backlit images can be produced by alternative methods, such as uv’s day/night printing or backlit fabric graphics. PhotoWorksGroup does offer these other services. Contact us to discuss which method will suit the needs of your project!
