As a graphics project manager for museum exhibits, you know all phases of collecting parts of the exhibit is complex. For one thing, from concept development to installation, it is essential to be mindful about your budget and time constraints. Would it not be fabulous if at least one component of your museum deliverables was made more manageable? This blog is being written purely to discuss simplifying graphics collection.
Like most, you probably work with a spreadsheet or schematic containing detailed production needs describing the various different types of graphics you must gather. Listing the graphics by its print type along with a description of its final use and destination within the exhibit is mandatory. Knowing and optimizing the lighting conditions of these graphics are key. Your graphics vendor should be made aware of the prescribed lighting conditions for your exhibit. Your graphics provider or PSP should offer you alternate printing processes so you can determine which solution is going to work best for the particular project. You also need to know your options for “value engineering” without degrading the value of the graphic identity of the exhibit! With the recession being not too far removed, it is important to know which adjustments in print substrates or sizing might be made offering significant savings and allowing you to stay within your proposed budget. Being cognizant of the value of your time, is certainly a cost to be counted in the calculation of project costs. May I suggest to you that if you are using with two or more graphic vendors, you might just be draining away your time and loose some control over the project. Perhaps a professional and diverse single graphics vendor should be employed to complete your project. A full service PSP would reduce alot of stress, while giving you greater control over the entire project. What happens when a problem arises and slows the project, and then you have to rush to meet the deadline? It would be significantly easier to contend with one PSP who knows your project and is looking to help you through the eye of the needle. Does your present graphics vendor have the expertise, diversity of tools, and creative flexibility to meet all of your needs?
If on your next exhibit, you find yourself using multiple graphics vendors, you may want to re-visit the vendor list and see if you can glean it down to a single diversified print service provider (PSP). When you have indoor and outdoor sign-making needs, can they handle the large format banner prints, make custom wallpaper, have capability to print on fabric, glass, wood, and metal? How about engraving options, laser prints, professional quality giclee’s, and you still need custom ADA signage to finish out the design?
Graphics project managers should conduct research through phone interviews or perhaps take a tour of their facility or arrange for the PSP to visit your location. The less outsourcing you do, the more control you’ll gain. Seek a graphics provider who you can serve as your primary resource! Find one who flexes creatively with your exhibits requirements, with equal concern over timing and your budget. Find a graphics provider who can partner with your exhibit design firm and achieve your projected goals together.
