Compliant ADA signage is :
- Tactile braille signs which usually describe the office number, department or occupant name.
- Letters on the sign are raised and a contrasting color to visually separate it from the background.
- The sign must be mounted 60 inches above the floor, and be hung on the same side as the door latch.
- Non-wheelchair accessible public restrooms must have signage to describing the alternate location of the nearest ADA compliant bathroom.
- Brochure holders in your public space must be between 15 and 48 inches off the floor to be accessible to persons in a wheelchair.
- All tactile signs must remain accessible and not to be blocked with objects, such as a plant or flag.
Know that not all sign makers have braille-providing capabilities. For compliant ADA signage, find a graphics or sign provider with an ADA rotary engraving machine in their toolkit. Roland and Vision are two manufacturers of such equipment. Sign makers need to have knowledge of the ADA Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG). Regulation correctness need not be your only focus when purchasing compliant ADA signs. Design options are now a possibility, and can accommodate corporate brand colors. They can even incorporate some imagery due to the advances in digital printing technology. The architectural design elements of an environment should be incorporated into your custom ADA signs. If you are a small operation, not working with the services of an interior designer; then you may want to work directly with a provider. All you will need to know is the PMS specs of your coporate colors. It would be helpful to send a few snapshots of your interior space to your customized ADA signage maker. A collaboration between your visual and budget concerns should be addressed with your sign maker. You still can purchase off-the-shelf ADA signage right off the web, but those signs will likely not contribute or blend with your branded environment. Give a call to 1.800.829.4562 and one of my representatives would be happy to assist you in your quest for custom branded ADA signage.
