Graphic Displays for the Built Environment
Graphics are very much a part of the “built environment.” Signage and artwork are seen everywhere on the interior and exterior of many a great architectural spaces. Banners and flags are seen on facades and nearby door portals. Wayfaring signage is mandatory to direct people throughout the spaces; as seen in large hospitality spaces, museums and office buildings. In retail spaces, there are always point of purchase displays. In museums, there are exhibitions full of informational displays.
Large format graphics are carefully and strategically placed throughout each space. Each environment follows color schemes generated from the organization’s brand, both from its logo and color scheme. Custom art panels or retail signage all work towards a single themed setting.
Large format graphics can exist in various forms.
- Large wall murals which are either custom vinyl wallpaper or stretched fabric just like canvas
- Repositional graphics which is a frameless piece that can be moved just like a decal
- Backlit fabric graphics similar to duratrans, but not nearly as cumbersome in wt. & profile. The frames are much more shallow and the fixture is many times lighter because they are now backlit with a lattice LED light system.
- Acoustical tiles with fabric graphics can be seen in office panels and dividers.
- Mesh solar shades made with fabric graphics which can turn this into an architectural element or a retail sign.
“Understanding the subtleties of how graphic design components influence the way we experience spaces can create a seamless integration between all designed elements, ultimately impacting the user.”
—Randy Pierce, Adjunct Faculty University of Minnesota
