Today’s dye sublimation transfer fabric printing process has become a popular alternative to other graphic printing techniques for many reasons:
It’s LIGHTWEIGHT
It can be produced in WIDE VARIETY OF SIZES
and shapes on recycled fabrics
It’s color output is more VIBRANT and more STABLE
It’s significantly EASIER TO HANDLE and SHIP
The Process
Dye-sublimation transfer printing gets its name from the process of transferring solid dyes onto fabric when heating the dyes into a gas. This sublimates the gaseous dyes deep into the fabric and offers the look of continuous-tone technology.
Dye-sublimation is a six color aquaeous-based ink process involving CMYK-LCLC (the LC stands for light cyan, LM stands for light magenta). There actually are double ink cartridges of each color(total of 12), such that the aqueous inks are double injected onto the paper for perfect coverage and saturation. After the inks are printed onto transfer paper, then sandwiched with polyester (recycled) fabrics and fed through a rotary heat press. The heat press is set to 400 degrees. With the heat and pressure of the rollers, the solid ink on the transfer paper becomes a gas and is transferred into the open fibers of the fabric. (The fibers are open because they are so receptive due to being nearly melted.) When the fibers cool, they will tightly grip the dyes. This process is called ‘entrapment’, which permanently bonds the dyes in the fibers. This process is so stable, that the fabric can be machine washed, and the dyes will remain unchanged.
Advantages
Both screen and ink jet printing processes lay ink on top of the fabric, thus making images more prone to cracking, scuffing and fading. The dye sub process impregnates the fabric, creating images that are much more durable. The actual color values of the dyes are more vibrant than ordinary screen printing. This fabric is breathable,it can be stretched, and dye-sub printing can be seen almost everywhere because the applications are broad and diverse, when needing custom printed graphic images, such as:
Custom Wall Murals for professionals
Custom Trade Show Graphics
Retail Soft Signage
Banners & Flags for Colleges, Museums, Banks, Zoos, Aquariums
Interior Designers custom curtains, shades, wall murals & even rugs
and so much more……
